Vernon
Vernon, with a population of about 25,000, is situated on the left bank of the Seine, midway between Paris and Rouen. It is in the Department of Eure in Normandy. It was founded in the IXth century by the first Duke of Normandy as a fortified city commanding the river Seine. The Notre-Dame Collégiale church dates back to the 11th century.
Only 4 km from Vernon is Giverny the location of Claude Monet's famous gardens.
In 2006 Worcester entered into a friendship pact with Vernon, where the Worcestershire regiment established a bridgehead in August 1944, which led to the liberation of Northern France and the Low Countries.
The Mayors of Vernon and Worcester signed a friendship agreement at the Guildhall, Worcester. In past years during Pentecost, a delegation from Worcester has taken part in the Foire aux Cerises in Vernon.
At present, the newly named Foire de Vernon takes place on the first weekend in June and Worcester has been invited to have a stall alongside the those from Bad Kissingen in Germany and Massa in Italy.
At last we were able to celebrate the 15th anniversary of our Friendship Pact, postponed from 2021!
The Worcester Male Voice Choir organised a concert tour to visit our links in France as part of the WWI commemorations.
At the end of August 2016 Worcester Twinning Association welcomed visitors from Vernon to mark the 10th Anniversary of the Friendship Pact.
