Ukmergé
Worcester’s friendship with Ukmergé began in 2008 when the Lithuanian Ambassador visited the faithful city. Asked if there was an opportunity of twinning with a town in Lithuania, he took out his phone and rang the Mayor of Ukmergé, his home town. Talks followed and a twinning agreement was signed by the two cities on 23 May 2011. Worcester now sends visitors to Ukmergé every year to celebrate their festival in May, while Ukmergé sends representatives to our Christmas Fayre during the festive season.
Ukmergé is one of the oldest cities in Lithuania, situated about 50 miles north of the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius. It is in a particularly beautiful part of the country at the confluence of the Vilkmerge and Sventoji Rivers.

Ukmergé is one of Lithuania’s oldest settlements having grown from an ancient hill fort.

Each year delegates from Worcester are invited to the Ukmergė Festival which takes place at the end of May.
